WELCOME
to our online course.... below are the modules that we offer.
1. Breeding & Artificial
Insemination - This module
discuss the performance of a pig as influenced by its environment
and its genetic potential. On the average, 70% of the performance
of the animal could be attributed to its environment such as nutrition
and feeding, housing, health, management practices and climate
and 30% to its genetic potential. Hence, it is also important
for us to look into the blood line of the animals. Each breed
has its own set of characteristics which differentiates it from
other breeds.
2. Pig Housing - Housing plays an important role in pig
production. It can affect the performance of the animals and eventually,
the outcome of the farm. It should be noted that pens or pig houses
should be properly constructed to make the pigs comfortable in
their pens. If the environment is not comfortable, the pig is
subjected to stress problems and prone to infection and setbacks
which open the way for disease outbreaks.
3.Health and Diseases - It is not easy to define what "health"
really means, although everybody has an idea about it. For humans,
the World Health Organization (WHO) defines "health"
as the state of optimal well-feeling in relation to the body as
well as to the mind. As for animals, and pigs for that matter,
we know very little about their mind, so we could just say a healthy
pig means the tissues and organs are functioning normally in harmony
with each other and with its environment. When this harmony is
disturbed and the pig is not able to maintain the balance between
its body functions and its environment, disease results.
4. Economics - There are three cost calculations presented
in this manual. Basic formulas are also shown before the calculations
are made. While these calculations are made, some important questions
are in mind: (1) how much does it cost to establish a certain
level of sow - weaner operation; (2) how much is the return per
sow per year; (3) what is the return on investment and; (4) what
is the payback period? It is imperative to identify the inputs
and the costs involved in a sow - weaner operation and how efficient
the use of these resources are in the production process.
Hopefully, the participant will be able to apply the economic
tool used in the module, more especially in the calculation analysis
of the cost of production, sales and return in one production
cycle or in one year of operation.
5. Record Keeping & Analysis - In a piggery operation, the data/information
recorded should be translated to understandable figures (technical
figures). It is necessary that these technical figures should
be analyzed to identify any weaknesses or failures of the farm
performance. The results from the analysis will further serve
as basis for the farm owner/manager in making adjustments or improvements
in the farm.
It is hoped that after studying this subject on Farm Administration,
you will have a clear understanding of record keeping and analysis
of technical figures and more importantly, implement the proper
and appropriate recording system in your farm for better management,
thus realizing your objective --- profitable pig production.
6. Feeding - There are differences in the performance
of pigs fed with different diets. Rate of gain tended to be poorer
for pigs fed with diets higher in fines content. However, feed
disappearance, which includes feed consumed and feed wasted, also
tended to be greater as the amount of cost in the diets, increased.
These two factors combined resulted in a significant negative
impact of increased fines content on pig feed efficiency. This
module discuss different feeding schemes given to pigs in relation
to their age and genetic quality.
7.Farm Management - The greatest limitation to efficient
pig production is generally the poor farm management practices
the animals receive. This is usually manifested in the production
efficiency, which implies the effects of breeding, nutrition,
housing, health and hygiene. Apart from these basic management
practices, breeding methods and schedule are equally important
to ensure optimum herd performance. These objective measures should
give emphasis on the breeding values of the animals. On the other
hand, the accuracy of these characteristics lies on the credibility
of the recording system that the producer is using.
